The subject of stem cells is relatively new to Indonesia and some of the aspects are controversial, especially embryonic stem cells. Embryonic stem cell research is still banned in Indonesia due to the ethical and legal consideration.

Ministry of Research and Technology

The Ministry of Research and Technology is in charge in any policies related to the stem cell research in Indonesia. 

Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health is in charge of the medical applications of stem cells. This Ministry has published guidance for stem cell application including; organisation of the medical services using stem cells, regulation of stem cell banks outside of hospital and the supervision of these.


Research Societies and Networks

Stem Cell Laboratory of the Institute of Tropical Disease, Airlangga University Surabaya, East Java


Biomaterial Centre - Tissue Bank Dr. Soetomo General Hospital/Medical School of Airlangga University Surabaya, East Java. 


Both of these agencies collaborate their research of stem cells and their applications. Recent topics of research inclue: Bone, Cartilage, Tendon engineering with use biomaterial from Biomaterial Center – Tissue Bank  Dr. Soetomo Hospital.




The main source of funding for stem cell research in Indonesia is the General Directorate of High Education, Ministry of National Education.

Indonesia has recently developed the Indonesian Stem Cell Association. The Members of this association consist of  industry, Government, and Academic representatives interested in stem cell development.
