Basic research in China is primarily coordinated and funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The ‘973’ grant scheme will fund three iPS related projects this year, with an estimated amount of 110 million yuan.
There will also be an expansion of the former ‘863’ grant scheme, which will now include stem cells.
Competitive grants for stem cell research are provided by the National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) of China (with special focus on Epigenetics) and by the local governments: the local government of Guangzhou will support iPS with 10 million yuan during 2008, in Shanghai 30 million yuan will be distributed during the next 5 years.
The NSFC provides additional funding for international cooperation and researchers exchange programs.

China is very permissive regarding any aspect of Stem Cell Research. iPS technology has been received with great enthusiasm by the Chinese scientific community and there are prospects that iPS based-clinical applications will be legalized in the near future.
